The risky compose-as-I-go freedom to create small but highly textured pieces on the embellisher/‘merger’ is vital to my well-being, I am discovering. Because I need to start a piece before I can begin to ‘see’ or even ‘hear’ its intentions, the convention of preparatory sketches is much at odds with these seemingly random and unstructured work-ways. Once started, however, my aesthetic sensibility kicks in pretty reliably and I begin to hear or sense in situ certain key words that express design elements and principles – and wonder where they came from! Line, curve, rhythm, balance, repetition, all start to dialogue with my eyes, ears, mind, and hands, if only I can pay them the attention they deserve.

When I heed the upwelling immediacy that calls me to my ‘merger’, the small scale of an emerging project means that both start and finish become within reach. Better small than not at all! These happenchances provide many mini-experiments without the fear of too much waste – of time, effort, expense. This risky freedom is teaching me practical trust - that I do have enough ability to produce a pleasing whole from diverse parts. And if not, tant pis!
